Deleting your Finance account
In short
This page is about deleting your account in the Finance app (on Google Play — Finance, identifier com.serhiipashchenko.capital; on the App Store — Finance). Developer: Serhii Pashchenko.
There are two ways to delete your account: right in the app (on iPhone) or by email to support@serhiip.dev — for that you do not need the app at all.
Deletion is irreversible. We will not be able to restore your data afterwards: we have no copies and no “trash bin”.
Before deleting, be sure to read the “What gets deleted” and “What stays” sections below — especially if you share a space with someone else.
Step 0. Do this before deleting
A couple of minutes now will spare you unpleasant surprises:
1. Disconnect your bank. Settings → Banks → disconnect every connection. This matters: there is currently a defect in our code — the bank connection record is not deleted automatically together with the account. By disconnecting the bank manually you are guaranteed to remove it. You can additionally revoke the token on the bank's own side.
2. Disconnect the Polish e-receipt hub if you used it.
3. If you own a shared space, warn its members (see the section about owners below) and decide what to do with their data.
4. Save whatever you want to keep for yourself: screenshots of reports, or an export on request to support@serhiip.dev.
5. On iPhone: if you also want to remove the copy in iCloud, turn off iCloud for Finance in your phone's system settings and delete the app.
Option 1. In the app on iPhone
1. Open Finance.
2. Go to Settings (the profile tab).
3. Open your profile card.
4. Tap “Delete account”.
5. Enter your account password and confirm.
We ask for the password on purpose: it stops anyone who gets hold of your unlocked phone from wiping your account.
After you confirm, the account is deleted immediately, at that very moment — not by request and not through a queue. The app returns to the login screen straight away and clears the local data on the phone.
If you signed in through a third-party service and have no password, the button will return an error. In that case use deletion by email (option 3).
Option 2. On Android — it currently does not work the way it should
Honestly, with no varnish: the “Delete account” button in the Android version does NOT currently delete data on the server. It only signs you out and clears the copy of the data on the phone. Your data stays on our server.
We are fixing this, and until the fix the only reliable way to delete an account from Android is to write to us (option 3).
If you already pressed that button and thought the account was deleted, it is most likely still alive. Write to support@serhiip.dev and we will delete it for real.
Option 3. By email — without the app installed
You do not need the app in order to delete your account. Even if you have already removed Finance from your phone or changed devices:
1. Write to support@serhiip.dev from the email address the account is registered to.
2. Put this in the subject line: “Finance account deletion”.
3. In the body, say that you are asking us to delete your account and all related data.
If the email comes from the account's address, we consider that sufficient confirmation. If writing from the account's address is impossible, we will ask you to confirm that the account is yours — for example, to name a few details only the owner would know. This protects against a stranger deleting someone else's data.
We confirm the deletion in a reply.
What gets deleted
When the account is deleted, the following disappears immediately and irreversibly:
- Your account record: email address, name, password hash, appearance and language settings.
- Your profile photo (the image is stored directly in the database and is deleted together with the account row).
- All your sessions on all devices — you are signed out everywhere.
- Your membership in all shared spaces.
- Every space you own, together with all its contents: accounts, categories, budgets, transactions, subscriptions, receipts, receipt line items and learned categorization rules. This applies both to your personal space and to family spaces where you are the owner.
- The invitations you sent.
- The connection to the Polish e-receipt hub linked to your spaces.
We have no copies, no archives and no “trash bin” — we cannot restore what has been deleted.
What stays — and why
Here we have to be honest, because deleting an account does not remove everything.
1. Your records in SOMEONE ELSE'S shared space stay. If you were a member (not the owner) of a family space, the transactions, receipts and rules you added there stay with the owner of that space. This is deliberate: otherwise your leaving would zero out another person's budget. Your name is unlinked from them — the “Added by” signature on those records disappears for good.
2. Your email address may remain in other people's invitations. If someone invited you to their space by email address, that invitation record belongs to them, not to you, and lives until they delete their space or their account. We are fixing this — we are adding automatic cleanup of invitations. If you want the address removed sooner, write to us and we will delete it manually.
3. The bank connection — a known defect. At the moment the bank connection record (with its encrypted token) is not deleted automatically together with the account: the relation in the database that would do this is not set up. So: disconnect the bank in the app BEFORE deleting the account, or write to us — we will delete the record manually and stop the background sync. We are fixing this in the code.
4. The cache on the server lives on for a few more minutes. Intermediate computations (membership, the calculated plan, the summary) are kept in a temporary cache and expire on their own: from one to five minutes; exchange rates — up to 30 days (they contain no personal data).
5. Copies of your profile photo that someone downloaded earlier may stay in browser and intermediate server caches for up to a year. Deleting the account revokes access, but does not erase other people's caches.
6. The copy on your iPhone in iCloud is deleted under Apple's rules, not ours. To remove it, turn off iCloud for Finance in your phone's settings and delete the app.
7. Technical server logs (without your email, passwords, tokens or amounts) live until the next server update.
8. If the law obliges us to keep something (for example, correspondence about a formal data subject rights request), we will keep only that and only for the period the law requires.
If you own a shared space — please read this
By deleting your account you delete every space you own, in full — with all the data of all its members.
That means the transactions, accounts, budgets and receipts added by your partner or your relative will disappear along with yours. They will not be able to take that data with them or to prevent the deletion, and transferring ownership to another person is currently not possible in the app.
What to do so you do not harm the people close to you:
- Warn the members in advance and give them time to save what they need.
- Or ask them to create their own space and move what matters there before you delete.
- If you need ownership transferred, write to support@serhiip.dev and we will see what can be done manually.
The reverse is not true: if you are a member and not the owner, your deletion does not touch the owner's data — only your membership disappears, and the records you added stay with them without your name.
Timing
- Deletion in the app on iPhone: immediately, at the moment you confirm.
- Deletion by email: we process the request as quickly as we can and in any case no later than 30 days from the moment we confirmed that the request came from you. Usually within a few days.
- We send the confirmation in a reply.
- Whatever is listed in the “What stays” section is deleted within the periods given there or stays for the reasons given there.
I want to delete only some of my data
You do not have to delete the whole account. In the app you can:
- Delete your profile photo — in profile editing.
- Disconnect a bank — Settings → Banks. The imported transactions will stay; delete them separately if you need to.
- Disconnect the Polish e-receipt hub.
- Delete an individual receipt, transaction, account or category. Note: deleting an account also deletes all the transactions on that account.
- Leave someone else's shared space — your records there will stay with the owner.
- Delete your own space entirely.
If you need something the app does not offer, write to support@serhiip.dev.
I have no account, but you have my data
This is possible in two cases:
1. You were invited to a shared space by email address but did not accept the invitation. In that case we may be holding an invitation record with your address.
2. Someone entered your address when registering. We do not verify addresses by email, so this is technically possible.
In both cases write to support@serhiip.dev — we will find and delete those records and confirm it in a reply.
You also have the right to lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority: in Poland — UODO (uodo.gov.pl), in Ukraine — the Ukrainian Parliament Commissioner for Human Rights (ombudsman.gov.ua), in other EU countries — the authority of your country (edpb.europa.eu).
